My friend  Emmett Jack Lundberg  returns to the podcast this week to discuss the new season of his critically acclaimed series,  Brothers ,  which is the first narrative series to showcase stories of transmen. Emmett and I talk about how the success of the show has allowed him to increase production values and the size of his team, casting trans actors, and the different types of challenges that show up with increased “success.” It’s always a thrill to chat with Emmett, I know...

I sometimes feel a bit insecure talking with visual artists. I know so little about that world, so I fear I won’t have the knowledge or even basic vocabulary to carry on a worthwhile conversation. Enter painter  Jane O’Hara , whose charming approachability is matched only by her fascinating path as an artist who makes works about animals. She was an absolute treasure on this week’s podcast. Jane and I talked about her history as an artist, some of the recurring metaphors in her work, and...

Carrie Hawks  is a filmmaker whose film,  black enuf*  explores their journey as “a queer oddball seeking approval from black peers despite a serious lack of hip-hop credentials.” This animated documentary playfully explores race and self-acceptance through Carrie’s experience, and interviews with their family and friends. Carrie Hawks and I talked about their process in making this film, their journey toward becoming an animator and how they deal with “imposter syndrome.” For more...

I got a message from Bianca at   Shark Party Media   early last week that she had a perfect guest for the podcast:   Lauren Maul . One glance at her latest project,   Apologies from Men: The Album  convinced me that this was an activist artist I needed to meet. In   Apologies from Men: The Album , Lauren Maul has taken infamous male apology statements and created animated videos of paper dolls set to original music. The album features the apologies of Louis CK, Harvey Weinstein, Kevin...

Jeffrey Marsh  is a author, speaker, and non-binary activist who uses the Internet as their medium with tremendous success. Jeffrey was a huge success on (sadly, now defunct)  Vine , but their social media success extends well beyond that with over 350 million views of their positive and inclusive message. Jeffrey’s best-selling book,  How To Be You ,  made them the first non-binary author with a “Big 5” publisher, Penguin Random House. Jeffrey and I talk about veganism, cosmic...

Just about 48 hours after I met Macken on Twitter (yes! it’s still a thing) we were Skyping our way through this great interview for the podcast. Macken is the host of the brand new  Species podcast,  which teaches you everything you’d ever want to know about a given animal. A committed vegan, Macken combines his love of podcasting with his passion for vegan advocacy to make this incredibly listenable and educational podcast.  At the top of the show, I reflect on last week’s massive...

You’ll probably remember vegan rapper  Grey  from his award winning  Vegan Thanksgiving freestyle video  that went viral in 2016 and continues to get lots of vegan holiday love. His music + activism hybrid made him a perfect candidate to be a guest on the podcast, so I was especially pumped that he accepted my invite to chat. We talk here about his viral success, how his music (and health!) changed when he went vegan, his activism in Atlanta with  One Love Animal Save , and his EP, ...

New year, new focus!  Starting with this week’s episode of the podcast, I’m narrowing the focus of my guests to artists and creators who make work about their activism, and I couldn’t think of a better guest to start with than  Jason Oliver . I met Chris Hines and his crew last month when they interviewed me for  Taking Note – The Vegan Music Documentary.  Chris started the project as a means to find out how veganism has influenced musicians themselves. I was really excited they chose to include me in the film, and I have been really excited to discover more about Chris’ work in veganism and video on his youTube channel. He just did a 24 hour live stream to raise money for  Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary !

Recorded in  DxE ‘s house in Berkeley, CA, here’s my interview with powerhouse activist Priya Sawhney. It was incredibly inspiring and energizing to stay in the DxE house for a few days. Lots and lots of work happening at all times, yet it was still a joyful and beautiful place. I love their message about non-violence and in approaching with love. Priya and I had a great conversation about those ideas, and she gives a solid explanation about DxE’s work with open rescue.

Four days ago my pal Jill Strominger at  New Amsterdam Records  sent me  Finnegan Shanahan ‘s new album,  The Two Halves . She knew I would love and it she was right. I am fascinated by the fact that it is inspired by a map, and in love with the spirit and buoyancy of the music in this song cycle. The album is described as “part travelogue and part song cycle” and was commissioned and recorded by  Contemporaneous , a 21 musician ensemble whose mission is “to bring to life the...

I came across Harris Markowitz on Snapchat some time ago. Though I don’t remember exactly how I discovered him, I  do  remember becoming an immediate fan. His snaps are ridiculously creative and compelling and, with his company  A Cereal Production , he has created content for companies like Coca-Cola and Jolly Rancher. Whenever people tell me they “don’t get” Snapchat, I immediately direct them to Harris to see how he uses the platform and the potential it holds. His  Snapumentary...

Carol J.
